Custom Made Foot Orthotics

Custom-foot orthotics can be the base for a healthy spine and stress-free body. You might not think about your feet when the pain is nowhere near them. Often times, pain found in the back, knees, hips and neck can be alleviated by the support we give our feet.

Everyone’s feet are different, and many parts of the body can be affected depending on where you put pressure when your foot strikes the ground. Custom orthotics also work as added support for issues such as flat foot or bunions.

What are custom-made foot orthotics?

Custom-made foot orthotics are custom-made shoe inserts that are used to eliminate pain, discomfort and improve overall biomechanical function and performance. As well as abnormal foot function, custom-made foot orthotics can help with ankle, knee, hip and back problems.

Did you know that most health benefits plans include up to $300 per year for orthotics? Most people miss out on this benefit and they could get another set or orthotics year after year. This is helpful as you don’t have to keep moving the only pair you have between all your shoes.

Who needs custom-foot orthotics?

Orthotics are a complement to chiropractic treatments, they’re also preventative and restorative. Orthotics help with a multitude of conditions, most commonly:

  • Foot pain
  • Ankle pain
  • Hip pain
  • Knee pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Wrist, elbow and shoulder pain
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis

Orthotics are also great for people who spend a lot of time on their feet, such as hospital workers, servers or construction workers.

Footmaxx Metascan System

At the Centre for Natural Pain Solutions, we use the Footmaxx Metascan System, a computerized gait and pressure analysis system. It is an innovative diagnostic tool that analyzes foot function when a patient stands, walks or runs over a force plate.

The Metascan helps our doctors analyze your gait and prescribe the proper orthotics to help your feet function better. Footmaxx™ orthotics are thin and lightweight. They fit easily and discreetly into your existing footwear. You can wear your most shoes, and still get the proper support and correction from these orthotics. Footmaxx™ orthotics provide superior control and correction for foot and gait abnormalities. Custom made especially for you, these orthotics will correct and improve the way your feet strike the ground, enhancing your natural movement and helping your feet move more efficiently.

At our Centre in Winnipeg, you will walk across a computerized force plate that is connected to a computer. This force plate, has 960 electronic sensor points built into it. As you walk, the force plate captures the motion and timing of your foot throughout the gait cycle. The human eye observes at a frequency of seven images per second. The Metascan™ pressure mat scans the stance phase of gait at 150 images per second. This data is analyzed by the computer to produce instant 2D and 3D graphic images of the pressures under your feet you can view on the computer screen. The same information is then sent to Footmaxx™ via modem where sophisticated diagnostic software specifies the prescription for your custom orthotics and can generate a comprehensive gait and pressure analysis.

This technology is an important aspect of making orthotics that give you exactly the right correction and accurate measurements of the way you walk.

The great thing about orthotics is that you can move them from shoe to shoe, no need to commit to one pair every time you want to relieve your pain. You can even fit orthotics into sandals. We love to promote Naot sandals as their footbeds can be easily replaced.

FAQs

Are custom-foot orthotics covered under most personal insurance?

Yes, many extended healthcare plans include orthotics.

Will orthotics fit in my favourite shoes?

Yes, our custom-made orthotics fit in most stylish shoes so you don’t have to compromise.

How can orthotics help my pain when it’s nowhere near my feet?

The impact you experience when your foot hits the ground, though you may not feel it with each step, affects the entire body. Consequently, your knees, hips, spine and neck are prone to aches and pains. Orthotics help soften the blow when your foot hits the ground. They also help relieve tension on muscles from standing a lot.

Why do my orthotics feel uncomfortable?

You may feel pressure and discomfort in your foot and joints as your body gets used to the orthotics. The body is adjusting as they realign the structure of your foot and posture. To help alleviate discomfort, start by wearing your orthotics in two-hour intervals and increase the time over the next two weeks.

Will wearing orthotics weaken the muscles in my feet?

Orthotics do not affect muscle tone. They do, however, help your feet use the proper muscles and reduce fatigue.
