Back Pain

A common issue for people of all ages is back pain. If not properly treated, back pain can negatively affect your day-to-day routines and quality of life. At the Centre for Natural Pain Solutions, we have many non-invasive ways to treat and prevent different causes of back pain.

Common reasons for back pain

There are many different reasons why you could be experiencing back pain. You might already know where it’s coming from but haven’t found the right solution. Or, maybe you’ve been dealing with it for months, or even years, and have decided it’s time to seek professional help. Often times, the cause of your back pain might be nowhere near your back, for example, your hips are out of alignment or your arches have fallen and now you need orthotics.

The most common reasons for back pain include:

  • Recent injury: if you’ve been in a recent vehicle, work, or sports-related accident, you might be looking for both short and long-term care. Chiropractic care and physiotherapy are common treatments for injuries relieving pain both immediate and preventing future issues. Be sure to talk to your doctor about how MPI and Worker’s Compensation Board of Manitoba have resources and coverage for you.
  • Pregnancy: if you’re pregnant, then we don’t need to tell you about back pain. Pregnancy-induced back pain affects a mom-to-be’s everyday life including sleeping, walking and just general comfort. There are a few ways to help relieve this pain. Depending on your specific symptoms and needs, some of the treatments our practitioners may suggest acupuncture, custom-foot orthotics, or massage therapy.
  • Over-exerting yourself: As Winnipeggers, we’re no strangers to straining ourselves while doing housework. Especially when shovelling after a classic-Winnipeg snowfall. We often treat patients who’ve experienced back pain from over-exertion. Chiropractic care and massage therapy are CFNPS’s most common ways of treating these types of injuries.
  • Footbed or shoe issues: you might not think about your feet when your back aches, but the two are closely related. The way your foot strikes the ground affects your entire body. Custom-foot orthotics offer the support your feet, hips, and spine may be aching for.

CHIROPRACTIC CARE

Chiropractic care is the assessment, diagnosis, conservative management and prevention of musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions and disorder. If your back pain is located in the spinal cord, shoulders or ribs, this might be the treatment path for you.

PHYSIOTHERAPY

Physiotherapy is the treatment of movement disorders through holistic, hands-on techniques that rehabilitate and improve physical well-being.

CUSTOM-FOOT ORTHOTICS

Everyone’s feet are different, and the back can suffer depending on where and how your foot strikes the ground.

ACUPUNCTURE

Acupuncture eases back pain by stimulating the nerves, muscles and connective tissues. It also works as a preventative treatment to ease labour pains in pregnant women.

MASSAGE THERAPY

Massage therapy treats back pain through soft-tissue manipulation by using pressure, motion, tension and vibrations to ease pain.

I highly recommend Dr. Morrow. He’s straightened out my back, allowing me to work at a desk far longer than would have been otherwise possible. He’s gentle, skilled and I count myself lucky to be one of his patients. Can’t speak highly enough about his care. – about Dr. Morrow via ratemds.com

FAQS

When should I see a chiropractor?

If you’re in chronic pain or have had an accident that left you unable to perform everyday tasks, a chiropractor might be the solution for you.

If my back is hurting, should I stay in bed until I see a doctor?

It’s a myth that the best rest is the best treatment for back pain at home. In some cases, like extreme, incapacitating pain, it is necessary. But for most, bed rest can actually worsen the condition. Make an appointment with your chiropractor immediately to map out the best treatment plan for you.

What if I don’t know what treatment (chiropractic, physiotherapy, etc.) is best for me?

If you’re unsure what is causing your pain or who to see to help fix it, please contact us, our clinic can help determine the source of pain and the best treatment plan for you.

Why does my back hurt during pregnancy?

Muscles and joints can suffer as an expecting as your body accommodates for the growing baby. The two main factors that contribute to an achy body are weight gain and a hormone called “relaxin”.

A healthy weight gain during pregnancy, on average, is around 30 pounds. That extra weight puts pressure on your back and joints. The changes in the pelvis also cause stress to the low back.

Relaxin is a hormone that, during pregnancy, loosens the joints to allow the pelvis to support the pregnancy.

It is absolutely normal to experience back pain during pregnancy. Chiropractic care and other hands-on therapies have been proven to reduce pregnancy discomfort associated with back pain.
